Where to begin?

You know your kitchen needs remodeling, but you don’t know where to begin! It may seem like the list of things to do is endless, but don’t worry, just follow the steps below and take our advice. You’ll be on your way in no time!

  1. Decide What You Really Want, and Why
    • What is the main motivation for remodeling your room? To add extra space, upgrade the area, make changes to address health problems, or just to improve your overall living space.
    • What are your options? Do you have room to expand into the front or back yards or another room in the house? Or, is there enough room to redesign using the existing floor space?
    • Prioritize. Figure out what you want to change the most, and what you can live with or just update.
    • Get input from all members of your household–they have needs and wants, too.
    • Consider the short-term and long-term implications of your renovation decisions. Do you currently have children, what are their ages, how long do you plan to live in this house, will your choices increase/decrease the home’s resale value?
  2. Collect Ideas and Information
    • Magazines and books are great resources to see inspiring designs, trends and new technology; this will help you pull together the ‘look’ you want.
    • Create a binder filled with pictures and clippings of ideas that really represent your taste and style.
    • Watch TV! There are plenty of home-improvement shows out there to help you determine what you’re looking for.
    • Visit home shows and manufacturer/supplier showrooms.
    • Listen to suggestions from friends, family and co-workers that have renovated. What did they learn, what do they recommend?
  3. Establish Your Budget
    • What is the total amount you are willing to spend?
    • How much can/are you willing to borrow?
    • Itemize your priorities and determine what you are willing to spend the most money on.
  4. Work With A Qualified Professional
    • Find a company that truly specializes in design and space planning.
    • Ask to see their portfolio or samples of their work.
    • Ask for referrals and follow up on them.
